VESTIBULAR PHYSIOTHERAPY
What is vestibular physiotherapy?
Vestibular Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy which is focused on assessment and treatment for dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance.
At HeadFirst Physio, we aim to diagnose the underlying cause of your vertigo / dizziness / imbalance, using thorough assessment and the best available resources (e.g. infrared goggles).
Common symptoms in vestibular conditions include:
Dizziness
Vertigo (sometimes a spinning sensation)
Nausea and sometimes vomiting
Light-headedness
Imbalance, feeling unsteady or having falls or near-falls
Headaches
Motion sensitivity (feeling unwell in the car or with other movement)
Worry and anxiety
These symptoms are often caused by problems with the inner ear (vestibular system), the nerve supplying this structure (vestibular nerve), or the central nervous system processing components (brain and brainstem).
Common conditions which we can help with include:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Vestibular migraine
Vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis
Meniere’s disease
Persistent Perceptual Postural Dizziness (PPPD)
Imbalance and falls
Treatment will be individualised, and can include vestibular rehabilitation. Vestibular rehabilitation involves exercises (including a focus on balance exercises), education (empowering you with the knowledge and skills to manage symptoms), and can include repositioning maneuvers (such as the Epley).
